LAHUG
History
LAHUG is a saga of growth and expansion.
The entire area was once covered by
a vast expanse of towering trees which
covered hundreds of hectares within
the span of a lifetime, however, it
has metaphor into an upper class suburban
area. Before world war II the elite
chose to reside in this quite and cool
place. In the 1950's an intervening
businessman built a fashionable suburban
housing development project patterned
after the San Francisco's hillside homes
- The Beverly Hills of Cebu. This classy
residential district had come to mean
the ultimate modern living. The view
of the city from Beverly Hills is superb.
A radio-television network DYTV and
Channel 13 is built atop Beverly hills.
Lahug
used to be a by-word of local air travelers.
It was in Lahug airport where Cebu was
linked, axiomatically speaking to Manila
and other cities and provinces of the
archipelago. In 1967 airport operations
were transferred to Mactan Island owing
to a bigger airstrip and to lessen the
danger of airplanes crashes night in
the heart of the city as Lahug Airport
was only a few kilometers from downtown
Cebu. Lahug however was urained an alternate
landing area for the Mactan international
Airport.
When
Lahug was yet forestland, insurrectors
used to sank refuge in the numerous
files of heavily-foliated trees. Spaniards
could not penetrate the nearly inaccessible
paths of the jungles. But the natives
could easily weave in and out of the
way (Lahug-Lahug in Cebuano). This forest
came to be known as Lahug-lahug and
with the peoples knack for shortening
terms, in time came to be known as LAHUG.
